Nashville Star's Come Out for
2nd Annual "Stars for Hope Benefit"

Nashville Star's Come Out for 2nd Annual "Stars for Hope Benefit"
In 2004, Marty Slayton gathered Nashville Star alumni together to
help benefit Lupus and create the "Stars For Hope" annual concert.
2005 made the event much larger of course with the addition of
finalists from the third season.
Each year the show coincides with the CMA Festival, without
interfering with the festival activities. When the first lists came
out for the 2005 benefit, eight finalists were on the line-up, the
night of the show fifteen finalists showed up to perform!

2005 reunited season one finalists Anne
Louise Blythe, Amy Chappell (with friend Jason Jones), Prentiss
Varnon and john Arthur Martinez, season two finalists Gregory DeLang,
Mal Rodgers, Marty Slayton, Brent Keith, Jennifer Hicks (with duet
partner Rick Ferrell), and Matt Lindahl, and season three finalists
Casey Simpson, Jenny Farrell [unable to perform due to a throat
ailment], Justin David, Jayron Weaver, Jody Evans and 2005 Nashville
Star winner Erika Jo (Heriges).
Not only did these contestants donate their time and talent, but
also a portion of the proceeds from their own merchandise sold
during the night.
Gregory DeLang is very close to the cause. She explained "one of the
reasons I like being part of the Lupus Foundation is my family
doctor has Lupus. She's come close to dying a few times. She's [now]
in remission and [working in] herbal research in a program at
Vanderbilt University Medical Center. (The program starts in July
2005 and her Dr. is holistically certified)".
The Nashville area chapter of the Lupus Foundation holds several
fundraisers throughout the year in addition to this "Stars For Hope"
benefit.
In 1994, they began an annual golf tournament. In 1998, started a 5K
Run and Walk. And in 1999, a Garden Tour [of creatively designed
area gardens] as well as a Gospel Event held in local area churches.
Lupus ranges from mild to life threatening and thousands die from
the disease each year. The majority of cases can be controlled with
proper treatment. There is no method for cure but research continues
thanks to benefits such as these.
We encourage you to learn more about Lupus through the website
www.lupustennessee.org
for information on support groups, educational meetings, phone
counseling, referrals, assistance, as well as a lot of information
on the disease.
If you are personally affected by Lupus, or know someone who is,
membership to the Lupus Foundation is literally a click away via the
internet. Membership helps to support the organization as well as
provides you with information on the foundation locally and
nationally. Or you can also support through the purchase of
bracelets and/or car magnets.
Make sure that if you're in Nashville, or even just visiting that
you add this show to your must-see list. It's basically a reunion
for the Nashville Star cast and audience.
After all we got to see:
How much Gregory DeLang's little boy, Dakota had grown [Season Two
watchers will recall he was born just the week before the first show
was taped in February 2004].
john Arthur martinez twirl wife Yvonna around the dance floor.
Brent Keith announce that he would be marrying longtime-girlfriend
Nicole the following week.
Jennifer Hicks introduce everyone to her new recording partner Rick
Ferrell along with some great new material.
Mal Rodgers and Justin David both treat the crowd to new
self-written material.
Marty Slayton treated most of the performers to her background
vocalizing services as well as music from her self-released project
- she also reminded everyone to check her new material out on
countrymonkey.com [Lance Miller and Justin David material can
be sampled there as well].
Jayron Weaver, Jody Evans, and Erika Jo were all prepping to head
out on the 2005 Nashville Star Tour and Erika Jo's new CD "I Break
Things" was released this week.
We have to give a special nod to our emcee for the night Wix
Wichmann [who also did Season Three in-studio warm-ups] because we
never know what he might say next!
I have to say Lance Miller we did miss you even though you were out
with those Warren Brothers [Judges Season 2] but we did understand.
Everyone make sure to watch CMT's "Barely Famous" because rumor has
it that they were taping the week that Miller was on tour with the
boys.
So you really don't want to miss any of this in the future now do
you?

A country girl, from Cerritos
Casey Simpson beat thousands of contestants to become a finalist on
'Nashville Star.'
By BLYTHE BERNHARD
The Orange County Register
Casey Simpson beat out thousands of contestants to land a spot on
the third season of the TV show "Nashville Star," country music's
version of "American Idol."
Each week the 19-year-old from Cerritos and nine other finalists
sing one song of their choice, and then viewers decide which singer
is sent packing. The final four performers will go on a tour with
the show's host, LeAnn Rimes.
Simpson will sing "Me and Bobby McGee" on this season's third show,
airing at 10 tonight on the USA Network.
Simpson is taking a semester off from Cypress College to be on the
show (filmed live in Nashville) and talked to the Register by phone
last week.
Q. What has the "Nashville Star" experience been like?
A. You're here, but you're not. It's a totally different world from
home. Seeing yourself on TV is really weird. It's the first time
I've ever been on TV.
Q. How did you get into country music?
A. I listened to a lot of stuff when I grew up. I just fell in love
with country. I know it's kind of weird from a girl growing up in
L.A. Mostly people in L.A. think I have to sing pop. I'm not into
that. I do listen to other stuff besides country. I listen to rap
and pop and everything. My heart's in country to sing.
Q. What has the reaction been like in Nashville when they find
out you're from Southern California?
A. They think it's cool that a girl from L.A. is even on a country
show. They've accepted it. They are not so concerned that I'm from
L.A. I don't think it's really such a big deal.
Q. Who are your musical influences?
A. I have a lot of influences. Fleetwood Mac to Bonnie Raitt to
Foreigner to Reba McEntire to Garth Brooks to Randy Travis. I grew
up listening to a lot of things. I don't have one influence.
Everybody as an artist has something to give off to other people.
Q. What do you think your chances are of winning?
A. Honestly there's a lot of talented people on this show. I have a
pretty good chance if I just stay myself. I think every contestant
has something to give to the world. I'm not the type of person to
say I'm here because I'm gonna win it. I feel coming into it very
confident; at the same time everyone's really good. You never know
what America's gonna do.
Q. How's Nashville compared to Southern California?
A. I love home. It's very fast-paced. Out here I love it because
it's just countryside.
Q. So, are there lots of hot guys in Nashville?
A. Who's gonna lie? There's a lot of cute cowboys out here. But I'm
so focused on my music right now.
Q. What is LeAnn Rimes (host of "Nashville Star") like?
A. She's awesome. She's just like any other person. When I first saw
her I was star-struck. She's just another person but she's done
amazing things. She's doing what I want to do.
Q. Has she given you any advice?
A. She calms us down and says don't get nervous. She's down to
earth.
Q. What about the judges on the show? How did Bret Michaels (of
the rock band Poison) get in there?
A. I have no idea. I think he adds some flavor to the show. He's a
cool guy. He was Poison, but he's got that country side of him, too.
I think it's cool for him to be on a show like this because he's
very popular. He says whatever the heck is on his mind and he
doesn't hold back.
Q. Like when he said you were "hot"? This is a guy who dated
Pamela Anderson!
A. That was pretty funny. At least I got called hot by Bret
Michaels.
Q. So what happens next for you?
A. The top four contestants go on tour with LeAnn. Even if I get
kicked off and I'm not a winner, either way I'll be right back here
(in Nashville). I'm gonna move out here because this is where I'd
love to live and love to be.
Q. What do you want viewers to know about you?
A. I'm a hometown, down-to-earth kind of girl. I'm just Casey. And I
love my mom and dad very much. If you act like a star, you're not a
star.

A little bit country!
Casey Simpson looking to be the next
"Nashville Star"
By Phillip Zonkel
Staff writer
Casey Simpson's audition for the third season of "Nashville Star,"
which premieres at 10 tonight on the USA Network, had an unexpected
distraction — the roar of a garbage truck. In October, the producers of "Nashville Star," a county-music
version of "American Idol," launched their nationwide contestant
search at the Cowboy Country bar in northeast Long Beach, before
heading to 30 other cities.
Because the Cerritos resident is only 19 years old, the bar
management wouldn't let her inside to audition. She waited outside
with about 15 other hopefuls.
When it was her turn, Simpson was set to belt out her version of
"Landslide" (originally by Fleetwood Mac and covered by the Dixie
Chicks) when a garbage truck pulled up to the building next door and
noisily began picking up the trash.
But that didn't stop her. Simpson, who has recorded a track as the
Wooden Grandma in the "Rugrats" movie and has sung the National
Anthem at the Staples Center during Lakers, Sparks and Kings' games,
kept singing.
"Of all the times I'm trying to audition, a garbage truck has to
come by when it's my turn," she says, laughing, before catching a
plane for Nashville to appear on "Nashville Star" s" debut episode
tonight.
Jeff Boggs, one of the show's two executive producers, was impressed
with how Simpson handled a potentially stinky situation.
"You couldn't really hear (her), but what was great was she didn't
stop singing," he says. "Everybody was like, 'Man, she's got a
strong voice." It kind of made us stop and look at her."
And they liked what they heard.
"Her voice was unbelievable outside," Boggs says. "She nailed every
single note, the beginning of the note and the end of the note. It
was like every aspect of the song was perfect.
"Her stage presence outside next to a garbage truck was still
incredible," Boggs says.
Here are a few other notes on Simpson:
On opening "Nashville Star" by singing the Keith Urban song
"Somebody Like You': "I wanted to be different. I thought it would
be cool if a girl sang a guy's song. I've always wanted to sing it,
so why not sing it for the show. But I guess I wasn't so different.
Christy McDonald, one of the (other) contestants, (selected) a guy's
song, too."
On watching the show : "I watched the first two shows of each
season, but after that I didn't watch it. I was more of an 'American
Idol' fan. What drew me toward ('American Idol') was all the drama.
Then I realized 'Nashville Star' was a cool show, and I tried out
for it."
On being a country-music fan: "I grew up with a wide variety of
music — Fleetwood Mac, Foreigner, the Rolling Stones — but my heart
fell toward country. My dad loves country. That's all he would play,
Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, George Strait, Randy Travis. When my dad
started playing Pam Tillis and Reba McEntire, I was like, 'Wow, I
really like this." "
On going back to school after "Nashville Star': "I do want to go to
school to have a backup plan. If this doesn't work out for me, I do
want to have a job to go to," says Simpson, who took a semester off
from Cypress Community College to compete in "Nashville Star." "I" d
be a dental assistant or a cook. I like cooking."
On watching Food Network more than Country Music Television: "All I
watch is the Food Network. I like watching 'Unwrapped." They tell
you how Skittles are made and how they make Doritos. It's the best
show ever."

Nashville Star' in town...

Article Published: Thursday, July 07, 2005 - 12:00:00 AM PST
By Karen Robes, Staff writer
PARAMOUNT - A hometown singer who scored a top 10 spot on a country
music talent show will kick off the city's summer concert series
tonight at Paramount Pond.
Casey Simpson, "Nashville Star' finalist and daughter of former city
manager Jack Simpson, will cover songs performed by Sugarland and the
Dixie Chicks as well as some of her new material.
"It's exciting to be back home. It's a little weird, though. I'm used
to rolling hills and cows," she said, jokingly. "I'm not used to
seeing buildings."
Simpson, 19, splits her time living with a fellow contestant in
Nashville and her family in Cerritos. She recently finished recording
an album, scheduled for release this summer.
Simpson impressed producers in October with her Fleetwood Mac cover of
"Landslide." She belted out the song over the sound of a garbage truck
rumbling outside of the Cowboy Country bar, where auditions were held
for the show's third season.
The Paramount concert will begin at 6 p.m. at the corner of Paramount
Boulevard and Jackson Street. For information, call (562) 220-2000.

Nashville Star 3: Episode 4
Behind The Scenes
By Andrew Thomas
March 23, 2005
From the consensus of the eliminated contestants as well as many
fans, I keep hearing that this may be the season for a female to
win. When I asked Phil if he agreed that this might be the year that
a woman takes Nashville Star's top spot (which would be the first
year for a female to do so), he replied, "I hope so. I think Tamika
[Tyler] and Erica Jo have the voice and stage presence to do it."
Look for Phil's own stage presence next week as he'll be opening the
show with a performance of his current single, "I'll Take That As A
Yes (The Hot Tub Song)" from his current album "Shaken Not Stirred"
on Arista Records.
Immediately after I finished talking with Phil, I met up with Casey
Simpson upstairs. She is a poised and beautiful young woman who's
good attitude showed through just as Phil had mentioned.
"It sucks, but you gotta keep going," was the first thing she said
to me. With a smile and a laugh, she added, "I'm gonna hold my head
up high and keep doing it."
Casey gave me a glimpse of the show from the contestants'
perspective. "It's really hard to go out there," she explained. "I
don't think a lot of people understand what we go through. You know,
[we] rehearse in a fake order. You rehearse all week long, and when
it's showtime, you don't know when you're gonna go out there. Those
nerves bottle up inside of you, and for a second you don't know what
the first lyrics of your song are. I think the nerves actually got
to me the last two performances, and I've never performed with an
actual band before until Nashville Star. But all-in-all, it's been a
great experience."
Casey told me that she nearly made the show last year in season 2,
and figured she'd try her luck again this time around. "I went out
for it last year and made it to regional," she said. "And then [this
year] I thought, 'Why not, let's try it again', and so me and my mom
went out [to the audition]."
Casey said that a Nashville Star should have
some unique qualities that include "someone who can connect with the
audience. You know, have that experience with your music...and
writing and playing. I've started to write and it's hard. So many of
the contestants have written millions of songs already, and I'm
still trying to write my first one. I don't think that has anything
to do with why I got kicked off or anything, but ya know, a
Nashville Star is the whole package."

Nashville Star 3: Episode 4
Behind The Scenes : Cont...
By Andrew Thomas
March 23, 2005
Since I had just talked with Phil Vassar, one of the judges, I
wanted to get a contestant's perspective on this season's judges and
how the contestants view them.
"I think they're all really good, but to be honest, I'm afraid of
Anastasia," Casey laughed. "She's kinda harsh . She's a nice lady
and a lovely woman...she's beautiful. They're there to give us
advice, for us to take it in. Like Bret Michaels, I was gonna sing a
song he told me I should sing, but I didn't make it."
Regarding the remaining Nashville Star hopefuls, Casey predicted,
"To me, the top 3 are gonna be...in my opinion, I mean I love
everybody...but to me the top 3 are definitely my girl Tamika
[Tyler], Jason [Meadows] and Jayron [Weaver]."
"I'm gonna go home, relax for a week and then go put my name out
there," Casey stated regarding her future plans. "I'm gonna come
back to Nashville. They sent me home but I'm gonna come right back,
'cause this is where I want to be. It's just where the heart of
country music is, and this is where I need to be to do my music.
L.A. is cool, but I need to be out here to do my music. Look out for
Casey, 'cause I'm not quittin'!". For more about Casey and her
music, log onto her website at
www.caseysimpson.com
I ran back to my car following my interviews in a huge thunderstorm.
It was pouring rain and I thought I was gonna get struck by
lightning. The electricity will definitely be in the air next week
as well, cloudy skies or not, as the contestants get to perform an
original song. It should be pretty electrifying, if I do say so
myself.
Nashville Star airs live from Nashville, TN every Tuesday night at
10/9 Central on the USA Network.
Andrew Thomas is a musician, songwriter and journalist in Nashville,
TN. Every week, he will be covering Nashville Star from
"behind-the-scenes" and bring exclusive interviews from the
eliminated contestant as well as those involved in the production of
the show, including the judges.
